update of various activities held at sankalp between August and September , 2011

Students of Sankalp the Open School participated in various talent contests conducted by Soroptimist International, Chennai on 7th August. Our student, Ram Srivatsav won the first prize for Classical Singing (solo).

Osho Drawing Competition was conducted on 11th August, 2011 at Sankalp the open school. It was open to all students.

64th Independence Day Celebrations held on 15th August saw the children pay their tribute to the freedom struggle movement. Shri ravindra Ambedkar, D.I.G. Coast Guard was the chief guest. On this occasion, Mr Ambedkar spoke to the children and appreciated their efforts.
The Investiture Ceremony was also conducted on the same day and our elected student leadrs were presented with the badges.

PAPERMAN , an NGO working extensively in the area of paper re - cycling conducted seperate workshops for our junior , middle and senior group children on the importance of being environment friendly and understanding the importance of re - cycling paper. Hands on activities and use of visual aids helped not only to educate the children but made it an enjoyable and memorable experience. These workshops were condeucted on the 16th, 18th and 19th of August.

FIELD TRIPS

Fireman trail took the junior group on a trip to the fire station on 26th August. It was a wonderful experience for the children to understand in the form of story telling, role - playing , fire - drills and demonstrations. They also have an inside look at the vehicles and meet up with the fireman in person.

Middle group visited the Egmore Museum on 29th August. The story of early man was exposed to the children in the form of enactment and other activities. The visit to the various sections of the museum also gave the children a better understanding of Stone Age.

News paper trail to the Lokavani printing press on 30th August gave the senior students an insight into the functioning of the activities at the press. The students interacted with the staff. Question - answer time, story time, mock sessions were all part of the days activities. The students went around the press and had a first hand view of the equipment and process of binding. It was an informative, educating and interesting experience for the children.

The students of Sankalp organized the teacher's day programme with a lot of enthusiasm and effort. An entertainment programme with misic, dance and singing was presented followed by games, snacks and fun.

Our teachers Mrs Pratiba Srinivas and jaya Indrajit attended the math workshop conducted by Jodo Gyan from Delhi. It was held at the MEASI College, Choolai, Chennai. The workshop was arranged by Ms Sadiya from Vidya Sagar and the resource persons were Ms Shaji and Miss Komal.

It was onam celebrations at sankalp on 12th September. The school wore a festive look with children and teachers in traditional wear. The fragrance of flowers filled the air as children prepared for the rangoli competition. Students and teachers presented traditional dance and song on this occasion. It was fun day at sankalp.

Sankalp - The Open School

Sankalp - The Open School re - opened for the academic year 2011- 2012 on 15th July,2011. Results for the N.I.O.S. 10th and 12th examination conducted in the month of April were announced and all the children have successfully passed the examination.

The Open School conducted the school elections on the 22nd of July, 2011. The students were elected for the post of School Pupil Leader , Sports Captain , Vice - Sports Captain , House Captains and Vice - House Captains.

A Theater Workshop was conducted on the 2nd and 9th of July by Mr.Balakrishna of theater " Nisha " for the parents of the students of Sankalp. It was aimed at helping the parents having a better understanding of themselves and also have a better prospective of the abilities and needs of the children.

The Teachers of Sankalp attended an International Conference on Behavioral Sciences on 8th July,2011 organised by Care Institute Of Behavioural Sciences and Helpchild Charitable Trust. It was an enriching experience and gave the teachers a better understanding of some of the behavioral problems faced by children today.

Sankalp Open School " Alumni " meet was conducted on 9th July,2011 and the programme was well attended by all the old students of various age groups and also the teachers who had worked in Sankalp earlier. Students had an opportunity to meet their old class - mates interact and share with them.

SANKALP - The open School

Sankalp re-opened on 10th June for the Academic Year 2010-2011.

The school currently has strength of 77 children.We are proud to inform that 14 childrem have been mainstreamed to various schools in the city.

NIOS EXAMS :

Results for the NIOS 10th and 12th exams held in April were announced and we are happy to inform that our children performed well.

SCHOOL ELECTIONS :

Elections to the post of school pupil leader,Captains of both houses Aryabatta and Bhaskara were held on 22nd June.

PARENT ORIENTATION PROGRAMME :

Parent Orientation programmes were held for all the groups in a phased manner in the 1st week of July.

FIELD TRIPS :

Field Trips were undertaken by the various groups during the first term.The groups visited Valluvar Kottam, U.S.Consulate Library and All India Radio.

43 students of the junior and middle sections visited the American Consulate on the re-opening of their new library section.Children had a fulfilled day with story telling and craft activities.They also watched Shrek Three.

A field trip was organized for the NIOS Prep, Intermediate and OBE groups who visited valluvarKottam and participated in the exhibition which showcased the culture and heritage of various north eastern states.

The senior groups visited the All India Radio station and interacted with the staff and had an overview of the organization.

5 teachers participated in the Instrumental Enrichment course during the week June 21st - 25th 2010.

U.S.Consulate, Chennai and Vidya Sagar invited Sankalp to a virtual discussion with Ms Julie Viens on July 15th 2010 on the topic Multiple Intelligence and Inclusive Education.Directors of Sankalp and 7 teachers participated in the programme.

Students participated in the Soroptimist Annual Interschool talent Contest on July 24th and took part in various competitions which included drama, drawing, elocution and singing.

Osho Communication, Chennai organized a drawing competition on 6th July at Sankalp.The competition was open to all the students.

Mr Balaji - Head of the department of occupational Therapy held a presentation for the teachers on " Importance of Occupational Therapy at School ".

Independence Day celebration saw children perform various cultural activities.Col Sunil Shiv das was the chief guest.

14th August was Alumni Day at Sankalp , old students gathered to meet and mingle with their friends,juniors and teachers.Old students shared their experiences and promised to take more active part at Sankalp Alumni.

We celebrated Onam on 23rd August and a Flower Rangoli Competition was held for the students.Students also put up cultural programme presenting the importance and relevance of the festival.

Teachers day was celebrated on the 5th of September and children independently planned, executed and presented a variety of entertainment programmes and fun games for the teachers.

In the 3rd week of September , senior students of Sankalp took a great initiative and took part in the international contest " DESIGN FOR CHANGE".They made presentations at various schools through the week making institutions aware about Learning Disability.They visited schools and distributed pamphlets about the same and culminated the programme on 24th September with a human chain.The hope that this small initiative will help in changing the mind set of people toward Learning Disability.

Half Yearly exams were conducted from the 16th to the 24th of September.School closed for vacations from the 25th of September to the 4th of October.

Feedback sessions for parents were conducted in the 2nd week of October.

On 26th October , Sankalp had students from various universities in the U.S.visiting the campus through " The Semester at Sea" programme.They interacted with all the students and staff at Sankalp.

During the second term students of Middle-4 presented a science exhibition on " Energy and Work" and students of Middle-2 presented a science exhibition on " Matter".

Children s Day was celebrated on 14th November.Teachers took immense efforts to put up an entertaining programme and also had a quiz show for the students.

It was a matter of great pleasure to have in our midst Mr Lee, son of Dr William L.Hevard and Dr Jill C.Dardig our speakers at the International seminar in March 2010.Mr Lee visited our school on 17th November.

NOvember 19th was probably the most important day in the Sankalp Calendar - ANNUAL DAY.The mayor of Chennai was the chief guest at the programme and theatre personality Mr P.C.Ramakrishna was the guest of Honour.Children put up a fabulous display of drama, dance and music.It was overwhelming to see the children perform with such energy and enthusiasm.

December 3rd is observed as World Disability Day.The students of Sankalp visited V-excel premises in Indiranagar and took part in the drawing competition which was held as a part of the World Disability Day programme.

Sankalp - The Open School re-opened after Christmas vacations on 5th January.

Parent Feedback Sessions were held on 10th , 11th and 12th of the same month.

We celebrated Pongal on 14th January.Children participated by preparing pongal and displaying traditional rangoli.

Republic Day saw children demonstrate their national pride by wearing costumes of various national leaders.

"Scroll of Honor" was held on the same day.Children are honoured in areas of competence and are asked to sign on the scroll signifying the importance of the importance of individual signature.

Sports Day was held on 4th February,2011.A host of exciting individual and team events were held.Children participated enthusiastically much to the delight of all parents,teachers and guests present.Mr paul Devasagayam was the chief guest on the occasion, an eminent personality in the special Olympics domain.

" Green Peace " held an interaction session on 8th February with our children, stressing on the need and importance of protecting our environment.

Senior students went on an outbound trip to Hampi on 9th , 10th and 11th February.It was an enriching experience for all of them.

" Techno Fest 2011 " was held on 19th February.Students across all classes displayed their science exhibits.Mrs Shalini Pillai , Principal - Lady Andal School was the chief Guest on this occasion and thiry students from Lady Andal also came to view the exhibition.Children displayed tremendous potential and caliber in all aspects of preparation for the exhibition.

It was time to say goodbye to our senior secondary students as they complete their 12th Std.A farewell programme followed by lunch for the outgoing students was organized on 3rd March.

Three teachers from the open school attended a workshop on " Gluten Free Cooking " on 4th March conducted by V.Excel.

Students from the " Semester at Sea Programme visited Sankalp on 9th march and interacted with our students.

Our Directors Mrs Subhashini Rao, Mrs Sulata Ajit and Mrs lakshmi Krishnakumar received the Annual Achievers award which was given by AABLA - ladies Club of Annanagar on 12th March.

The Learning Centre
( Autism Centre )

The academic year 2010 – 2011 started off with a bang on 10 June 2010. However there went before it three months of planning and preparation to perform better, weighing the pros and cons of the previous year. During April & May 2010

 Ms. Priya conducted a workshop for teachers on the practical use of Multiple Intelligence

 Mr. Balaji Chief O.T conducted an inhouse workshop on the benefits of OT
 Speech Therapist Ms. Praveena and Ms. Suma conducted a workshop for teachers of the learning Centre.
 On 9 July, 2010 & 10 July 2010 Ms. Sindu & Evelyn attended the II National Conference on Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Assistive Technology for children with Disabilities organized by ISAAC

Internship Placements

Field Visit

MSc students of counseling psychology from madras school of social work visited the school on June 29th 2010. Students of Architecture from the Hindustan Institute Technology and Science visited the school on 2nd July 2010, in connection with a project to design a school for children with Autism.

Krishna Jayanti, Onam and Teacher’s day was celebrated on 3rd August 2010. The teacher’s put up a fantastic show to entertain the children.


Independence Day:

The month of August rekindles the patriotic fervour of our ancestors as they struggled towards achieving a free India. Our school too put up a spectacular show hoisting our tricolor, singing patriotic numbers and hosting a soul-stirring cultural show by the Intermediate and Senior classes.

Parents’ Training Programme:

An orientation cum Training Programmes was conducted for the parents of the Learning Centre from 19 August, 2010 to 9 September, 2010. It was an informative session where parents discussed common problems faced by them and worked out simple ways of handling them. Apart from our Director Ms. Sulata, resource persons from the field also handle session for the parents. Dr. Mythili Chari spoke on Managementof Autism in Adult hood’.Dr. Shanthi Raj spoke on ‘edical Management of Autism’. A few teachers also attended some sessions to give in put and feed back.

Festivities Galore:

Come September, come festivals. This September sparked off a series of festivals, celebrated in style and grandeur. Krishna Jayanthi, Teachers’ Day & Onam were celebrated. A mini Krishna (Jagadish) clad in a splendid array made his appearance at school, broke apart and licked up chocolates … not butter. Onam celebration brought all the staff together dressed in off white dancing in merriment, much to the amusement of students.

Teachers’ Day out:

One day to remember and cherish by the staff at the Learning Centre was 18 September, 2010, when all the young at hart teachers enthusiastically went on a picnic to Tada. It was certainly an enjoyable one.

Field Trips:

Our Intermediate students were taken out to a Theatre in the city to watch a movie. Students of the Primary Classes were taken to a temple and church as part of their field Trips. These were useful and practical sessions of learning for our students.

Term I draws to a close:

After the vibrant activities and academics for the term , the school closed on 24 September, 2010 for the fist term vacation, and we were back on our toes for a rejuvenated start of the II term on 4 October, 2010.

Special Visitors:

On 7 October, 2010, the NIEPMD students visited our school to observe our children in action. On 26 October, a team of foreign students from the ‘Semester at Sea’ programme spend a day at our centre, and interacted with the children.

Celebrations:

The highlight of the Navarathri celebration in our school was a beautiful ‘Kolu’ set up, accompanied by merry singing and of course munching a variety of the sweets.

Eye Camp:

Dr. Agarwal’s eye hospital conducted a two day free eye check up for students in our school premises itself. It proved we useful for early detection of anomalies which were not detected other wise.

Special Events:

In the meanwhile, a few of our students attended the workshop ‘Social Skills Training using Role play techniques’ organized by IRIS (Institute for Remedial Intervention Services). Dr. Ramamoorthy, pioneer in Drama for the Autism World, conducted the workshop

Our students participated in the Roller Skating Competition conducted by the Michaels Center for Healing, and one prizes. Our children also participated in a Dance Competition organized by Mr. Madhan our dance instructor.

Diwali Dhamaka:

Diwali this year literally sky-rocketed with a lot of light and sound –bursting crackers, lighting sparklers, flower pot and rockets soaring through the sky. Children in the colour dress were no less than models marching up the ramps in fashion parades .

Children’s Day:

A fantastic Fancy Dress competition marked children’s Day 2010. Our children’s make over included characters like peacock chef, tribals, Gods, Mother Teresa and movie actors. Our parents organized a fun day for the students on children’s day

The year draws to close:

Before we could bat an eyelid, we realized that the year was coming to a close. But before winding up, we had a mega event, organized by the learning centre. Yes, our carnival’, Sankalp Utsav 2010’ on 18 December was a huge success. This invited in Actress Kushboo to inaugurate the Carnival. There was festivity in the year, with plenty of stalls to tingle our palate, decorative items, hand made creations, games, kiddies’ rides and a host of salesman from Amway, Tuppware, Oriflame, Kashmiri Kurtas and trinkets

The school closes on 23rd December for the II term holidays, but not without the Christmas celebration on the day.
This an much more to come for the forth coming year. Let us await the new year with awe and wonder as it brings in goodness, bounty and prosperty.


Pongal Festival was celebrated on 13the February 2011 children wore coloured dress. Moor celebrated with coloured Rangoli. Pongal pot placed milk boiled by Miss Subhashini. Children dance to music.

Republic Day celebrated on 25th January 2011. Flag hoisted by Mr. Rao. National Song & Antham Sung . Children dressed as a National Leaders & Freedom fighters gave short speeches.

Gate Way International School conducted ‘Bon to Win’ inter school competition, Intermediate & Senior students performed and won prizes.

Roller Skating competition conducted by Mr. Kamlesh in youngster Roller Skating Academy, Primary, Intermediate and Senior students won prizes. Prizes will be distri uted on Sports Day.

February 2011 – Events update

February was a short but eventpul month in the Learning Centre



The Annual Sports Day was celebrated on 3.2.2011 at the ICF Stadium between 2 p.m and 5 p.m Mr. Riaz Mohammed, former Indian Hockey Team Captain was the Chief Guest.

Picnic: On 11.2.2011, Students of Intermediate Group I went on an excursion to V GP Golden Beach. Staff members Ms. Mala, Ms. Jayanthi Ms. Elizabeth and Ms. Rukmani accompanied the children.

On 25.2.2011, Students of the Senior Group went on a day’s picnic to St. Thomas Mount and Chemmozhi Poonga, accompanied by Ms. Jayanthi Mukund, Ms. Sumathi, Ms.Aley, Ms. Angel, Ms. Kamakshi and Ms. Sophia

On 22.2.2011, Students of Intermediate Group II went on a day’s outing to Tholgappiyar Poonga and Planetarium. Ms. Indu, Ms. Sumitra, Ms. Angel, and Ms. Evelyn accompanied the children.

Puppet Show

Children of the primary group were taken to watch a puppet show on 23rd & 24th February, organized by the Kothari Academy in their premises. Both the day and afternoon primary groups were benefited

Seminar
Autism Seminar 2011 was conducted by Dr. Ramachandra Medical University on the 25th 26th of February, in the University Premises. Various Resource persons from the field of disability presented papers on facilitating Communication for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Ms. Mary, Ms. Rajkumari, Ms. Sayadevi, and Ms. Elizabeth attended the same. Resource Persons were Mr. Perumal, Ms. Mythilichari, Mrs. Kalpana Mrs. Mallika Ganapathy, Mrs. Vasundra (VEXEL)

PICNIC:

On 22nd February 2011 Students from the Intermediate group with our teachers went to the Brila Planetarium and Semmozhi Poonga


On 25th February 2011 students from Senior Class with their Staff went on a picnic to St. Thomas Mount and Semmozhi Poonga.


On 2nd March 2011a Dental Camp was conducted by Raga’s Dental College, for the children of the Learning Centre.

On 8th March 2011 International women’s Day was celebrated in SRM University . Sankalp’s stall was put up in the SRM University’s (InfoTech Wing).

On 9th March 2011 a batch of American Students of Semester at sea programme paid a visit to the Learning Centre and interacted with the children in school.

ANNUAL ACHIEVER AWARD

The ‘AABLA’ Anna Nagar Ladies Association presented a citation and award, on the 12th March to the Sankalp Trust , applauding the good work done to with children ASD.
